The Jefferson School District of San Benito County owns the Bear Valley School. At present the trustees have closed the building and grounds to the public. They have not announced what they plan to do with the building. Due to lack of use, the school has been invaded by animals and occasional vagrants who camp there. This historic old building, once the heart of a vibrant community, is in danger of permanent damage or collapse from the ravages of weather, fire, and neglect.
The "Friends of Bear Valley School" was formed to raise awareness of the potential loss of this picturesque old landmark and community asset, and to rally support among San Benito County citizens to acquire the building and grounds and maintain it as a community and visitor center for southern San Benito County. The San Benito County Historical Society and San Benito County Community Foundation have expressed interest in assisting a group dedicated to this goal.
It will take leadership to make it happen! Contact us if you are interested!"
